9 joyful ways to make someone's day
"Since you get more joy out of giving joy to others, you should put a good deal of thought into the happiness that you are able to give" - Eleanor Roosevelt
I absolutely love this quote. In fact, I love it so much, I based a whole module of Joy School around it! I’m a big believer in the idea that one of the best ways to invite more joy into your own life is to spread it to the people around you.
That’s because there’s a special kind of magic that comes with being kind to others. Think about it - you do a good deed for someone, they feel great and you feel great too because you've made someone else happy. Have you ever heard a better win-win? So in the spirit of spreading the joy, here are some things you can do to make someone else's day (and make yourself feel good too!).
1) Pay someone a compliment
Everyone likes to hear that they look great or that they're wearing a nice dress, but telling someone they're doing a great job or that they've been a good friend is even better.
2) Buy someone flowers
Because it's impossible not to be happy when you're given flowers. Pick up a cheap bunch of carnations or sunflowers for your Mum or partner or colleague and delight in their smiles.
3) Call your parents or your grandparents
No one will revel in your adventures and antics more than your parents and grandparents, and no one will be more proud of your achievements. Ring them and tell them what you've been up to, ask how they're doing and feel lucky that you have them in your life.
4) Give blood
Probably one of the most important things you can do - and you can bet your bottom dollar that whoever receives your blood will be pretty damn grateful. AND you get free biccies afterwards.
5) Thank someone for really great service
Whether it be the guy who makes your coffee or a shop assistant helping you with your packing, say thank you if the service is good. So many people tend to take it for granted these days, and it's really nice to hear you're doing a good job.
6) Buy a sandwich or hot drink for a homeless person
Pretty self explanatory, but probably one of the best ways you can spread a little love.
7) Volunteer
Listen to kids read, do some fundraising, lend your skills. Anything you can give to your community will always be valued.
8) Write letters to the people you love
It's very rare that you get post that isn't a bill these days and getting a handwritten letter or card feels novel and exciting. Bonus points for including interesting articles you've torn out of magazines.
9) Get your cook on
Because food is the best way to everyone's heart! Bake for your colleagues, cook a slap up meal for your besties or make breakfast in bed for your loved ones.
What would you add to this list? Let me know if you give any of these a go.
