It's never too late to make a change
I think one of the biggest myths that stands in the way of us living a truly joyful life is that we’ve left it too late. We tell ourselves that we’re too far down the path to make a change. We convince ourselves that we’re too old to get started with something new. We buy into the idea that being a beginner will be too hard, that we’re too accustomed to the lifestyle or career we already have.
I hear clients use that excuse all of the time. Heck, I know I’ve used it myself many times before. In fact, one of the reasons why I put off starting this business for so long was because I believed that I’d put too much time and effort into my previous career to throw it all away and start from scratch.
And I know that’s a common belief. It’s easy to think that it’s too late to change career paths once we have a decade of experience under our belts. It’s easy to think that there’s no point starting that new hobby when there are already so many people who are experts. It’s easy to believe that whatever life you have now is the life you’re always going to have.
But that doesn’t have to be the case. Ten years of experience is nothing when you consider that most peoples’ careers span five decades. Not starting something new because you might be behind the curve is a great way of ensuring you stay behind the curve. Accepting a life that you don’t love just because you’re too scared to change is like buying a one way ticket to misery.
The truth is, it's never too late to get started. We're never too old to learn or change. We humans are wired to adapt and trying new things makes us happy. I'm starting to realise that whether you choose to do the thing or not, the time still passes, and you'll only end up jealous of the people who seized the day and cracked on with it.
I think we could all do with approaching life with the same attitude as we did when we were teenagers. Harness that feeling that you can do anything, that the options are all still open. Because when you think about it, they really are. We have so much life still ahead of us that it seems crazy to pigeon hole ourselves too soon. Crack on with whatever it is you've been daydreaming about, regardless of whether you think it's too late or not.
Because really, the only time it's too late to get started is when you're dead. And I'm fairly certain that when the time rolls around, you'll only ever regret the things that you didn't do.
